SA: Govt to fast track interconnector

The South Australian government says it will fast-track the construction of an electricity
interconnection with New South Wales.

The state government says the move will ensure the private sector-funded interconnector,
known as MurrayLink, will be operational early next year.

South Australia's Treasurer, ROB LUCAS, has told a national power and gas conference
in Adelaide that the fast-tracking should cut up to nine months off the planning approval
process.

MurrayLink is being promoted by international groups TransEnergie and ABB and will
connect South Australia with New South Wales and Victoria through the Riverland region.

MR LUCAS says because MurrayLink will be underground for its entire route, the government
did not expect any significant environmental issues.
