Qld: No mass sackings in Queensland, says Telstra

Telstra says any job cuts in its Queensland workforce will be voluntary and there willbe no mass sackings.

A union official has warned telecommunications services in regional Queensland willsuffer with 35 technicians employed by Telstra Countrywide to be sacked this week.

Communications Electrical Plumbing Union branch secretary PAUL WHITE says areas affectedinclude Roma, Kingaroy, Gympie, Mareeba, Cairns, Port Douglas, Toowoomba and Stanthorpe.

Mr WHITE says the sackings will be on top of the 150 network builders sacked in regionalQueensland since Christmas.

But Telstra spokesman ADAM REDMAN says the workers have not been sacked and the companyhas no program of job cuts.

He says about a dozen people have volunteered to leave the company this week.
