NSW: Opposition says fines allow criminals to keep record clean
The NSW opposition says a system of fines for minor offences is allowing violent criminalsto keep their records clean.
Opposition police spokesman ANDREW TINK says a system where criminals no longer havetheir offences recorded is ludicrous.
Under the scheme, offenders can avoid a criminal record by paying on-the-spot finesof up to $400.
The government began trialling the scheme across the state in September.
Police have defended the trial, saying the new fines are often harsher than penaltieshanded down by magistrates.
They say the scheme's also significantly reduced paperwork and freed up officers for active duty.
